The RLF in the world The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLF) is one of the six major political foundations in the Federal Republic of Germany. Based out of Berlin, the foundation has offices on four continents. The Foundation is based on the commitment, political ideals, and dream of Rosa Luxemburg, a socialist, Polish, and Jewish woman who lived and fought in Europe between 1871 and 1919. The Foundation has taken its name in her memory.
Rosa Luxemburg was one of the historic founders of the current of democratic socialism ideal, focused on achieving social justice and political freedom. Inspired on these principles, the Foundation has made major contributions to political initiatives in Germany, and positions itself within original and current democratic socialism thinking.
From its beginnings, with the small groups of Social Critique and Political Education, founded in 1990 in Berlin, RLF has evolved to become an international political education organization, providing the possibility for discussion and fostering critical thought, as well as political alternatives. It is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Leftist political party (Die Linke, in German).
Since 2000, its international cooperation initiatives have had the support of Germany’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ). This is the first time a German democratic socialism foundation has expanded its work into other European countries and other continents.
Today, RLF aims to organize political education and work to disseminate ideas, knowledge, analysis and research that clearly understand the social context produced by a capitalist, globalized, unequal, unjust, and conflict-ridden world. We find it fundamental to foster self-managed political activity, supporting the commitment to peace with equality and understanding among the world’s people to achieve social justice and coexistence based on solidarity.
Some of the key areas of RLF’s international work include the current neo-liberal tendencies of globalization, democracy and social participation at the local, national, and regional levels, prevention of violence, equal rights, and integration into a society that no longer has marginalized social groups.
